Welcome to the Kim Fox Band! We are a dynamic group of musicians dedicated to delivering a unique and unforgettable musical experience. Led by siblings Kim and Joel Fox, we have joined forces with masterful artists Casey Freeland, Jonah Horton, and Jeremy Abshire. Together, we blend the beloved sounds of 3 Fox Drive with exciting new material.
Originally from the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, Kim Fox has been playing bluegrass music for most of her life. She, along with brother, Joel and sister, Barb were the core members of 3 Fox Drive (formerly known as The Fox Family), a band that enjoyed playing throughout North America and Europe. Kim captivates listeners with her strong and expressive voice as well as her from-the-heart original songs. She has previously recorded two albums with The Fox Family on Sierra Records, Follow My Lead and When It Comes To Blues (featuring the #1 self-penned national Bluegrass single, “The Dream”). 3 Fox Drive signed with Koch Records of Nashville in 2006 and released “Listen To the Music”, a project containing 7 of Kim’s original songs. Their collaborative project, "Christmas Grass Volume 3" was released by Koch Records in 2007 and featured 3 Fox Drive along with award winning artists John Cowan, Larry Sparks, Sarah Jarosz, Sony Isaacs and Russell Moore. Kim's song, "Watching Over the Soldiers At Christmas" features a recitation of the Pledge of Alliegience by Charlie Daniels.
Upon the dissolution of 3 Fox Drive, Kim began performing with 6-Time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year recipient, Dale Ann Bradley. After playing on and off with Dale Ann over the past 10 years, Kim decided it was time to revisit having her own band and has teamed up with her brother, Joel Fox to form "The Kim Fox Band".
Kim's accolades include International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards for her part on the Rebel Records recording, Follow Me Back To The Fold (2001 Recorded Event of the Year) and the 2006 Album of the Year, "Celebration of Life: Musicians Against Childhood Cancer". She is also a former winner of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest hosted by Merlefest.
In 1990, Kim began producing and promoting The Fox Family Bluegrass Festival which would continue for 18 years. This 4-day, multi-stage festival would become one of the premiere music festivals in the state of New York. Because of her experience with this festival, she was tapped by the International Bluegrass Association to produce their 3-Day, indoor festival known as “Fan Fest”. It was during that time that Kim founded IBMA’s Kids on Bluegrass program. This program brought extremely talented kids together to learn how to produce, emcee and perform bluegrass music. Many of these kids went on to become professional musicians (including our own Jonah Horton!!) and if you ask Kim, Kids on Bluegrass is her greatest accomplishment.
When Kim moved to Nashville in 1998 she was mentored by songwriting legend, Larry Cordle. In 2002 she was signed as a writer for Little Shop of Morgan Music, owned by grammy winning songwriter, Dennis Morgan. While she has had many songs recorded by fellow bluegrass artists, Kim's song, "Nothing To Lose" has been recorded by two of country music's greatest female artists, Trisha Yearwood ("Greatest Hits"- 2007) and Reba McEntire ("Keep On Loving You"- 2009).
Kim is excited about this new musical chapter. She cannot wait to record new songs and share them with all the friends and fans of bluegrass she has met along the way.
Kim Fox wouldn’t dream of starting a band without her brother, Joel. When it comes to baritone singers, there aren’t many better than this guy! Performing for years with his sisters, he learned how to sing ALL the notes! His banjo playing is versatile and innovative and we’re pretty sure he could make it work in any genre of music! Below is a little more about Joel…
Joel has had the privilege of playing bluegrass music with various musicians and bands for over 45+ years. His love of the banjo and bluegrass music started with his family band where he grew up in the heart of the Adirondack mountains in Old Forge NY. Joel’s banjo style is derived from the greats, including Earl Scruggs, JD Crowe, Sonny Osborne and John Hickman to name a few. Joel learned at an early age to sing bluegrass baritone listening to bands such as the Bluegrass Cardinals, the Bluegrass Album band, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, the Osborne Brothers, and Nashville Bluegrass band. Joel and his sister Kim Fox played together in the past in the Fox Family band, 3 Fox Drive and most recently in the Dale Ann Bradley Band. When not playing in the Kim Fox Band, Joel can be found picking banjo at various musical venues when at home in and around the Annapolis MD area.
Casey Freeland, one of the BEST bass players in bluegrass not to mention she’s a fantastic vocalist! We are honored to share a stage, a rental van, a booth at the Mexican joint down the street or a bag of Skittles with this girl!! You’re gonna LOVE her as much as we do.
Here’s a little more about Casey…
Casey Freeland comes from the Ozarks in Missouri. She started playing bass at the age of 11 and grew up playing music with her family. She has toured with Dale Ann Bradley, Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike, Roland White, Chris and Casey Henry, and other local bands. She currently has her own band in Missouri called Casey and the Atta Boys. Besides entertaining on stage she has worked on the business side of the music industry as well with jobs at the IBMA and Keith Case and Associates. She currently makes her home in Clever, MO. Casey is a singer, bass player, and songwriter and is excited to be an addition to the Kim Fox Band.
Introducing our mando man, Jonah Horton! We are beyond thrilled to have Jonah as part of the band. He's been called the "youngest member of the Fox family" for his fantastic personality, unbelievable work ethic and because he laughs at all of Joel's jokes! Below is a little more info on this budding music genius!!!
Jonah Horton is a 22 year-old mandolinist and bassist from Wilkesboro, North Carolina. He began playing the mandolin at the age of seven, and spent his teenage years traveling across the eastern United States with his progressive bluegrass band The Trailblazers. During his time with The Trailblazers, they were presented with the International Bluegrass Music Association‘s (IBMA) Momentum Award for band of the year in 2018 and also released two albums. The most recent of those projects, “Space and Time”, was produced and arranged by Jonah in late 2020. Most recently, he joined a star studded lineup of Grammy Award nominated bluegrass musicians to be the featured mandolinist on Scott Vestal‘s “Bluegrass 2022” album as well as the featured bassist on Joseph Henson’s 2022 jazz project “A Thousand Words”. Jonah was nominated on the second ballot of the 2022 IBMA awards for Mandolin Player of the Year, and is currently working towards a masters degree in music performance from Liberty University. Meet our fiddler, Jeremy Abshire! Jeremy is a top notch musician living in Nashville and we are so lucky to have him as a part of the band. When you read his bio, you’ll understand why! See below for more about Jeremy…
Fiddle player Jeremy Abshire burst onto the bluegrass scene as a member of Billie Renee and Cumberland Gap (winners of the 2006 SPBGMA International Bluegrass Band Championship). He has played and toured with multi-award winners Dale Ann Bradley and The Grascals. His style is both fluid and hard driving, owing to the influences of Benny Martin, Scotty Stoneman, Chubby Wise, Bobby Hicks, Kenny Baker, and Stuart Duncan – whom Abshire cites as his favorite fiddle player.
Born and raised on the fringe of the “bluegrass belt” in northeast Ohio, Jeremy began playing before he was 10, thanks to the gift of a fiddle from his grandfather, who took him to jam sessions and then to classical lessons. Jeremy leapt into the front ranks of bluegrass in early 2007, when he joined a group fronted by Kentucky songstress Dale Ann Bradley, a veteran with broad-ranging musical tastes who would win the first of three consecutive International Bluegrass Music Association Female Vocalist awards later that year.
Abshire was tapped in 2008 to join bluegrass superstars, The Grascals, when founding band member Jimmy Mattingly decided to resume full-time work with one-time employer (and Grascals’ fan) Dolly Parton. The group — already owners of four IBMA awards, including two top Entertainer of the Year trophies — turned to Jeremy, hiring him on the cusp of releasing their third CD, the critically acclaimed Keep On Walkin’.
With The Grascals, Jeremy’s playing was showcased and shined. TV appearances included The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The CBS Early Show, The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Marie Osmond Show and ABC’s CMA Music Festival: Country Music’s Biggest Party. Recording sessions included country superstars Hank Williams, Jr., Joe Diffie, Tanya Tucker, Dierks Bentley and Charlie Daniels.
Jeremy has played venues around the world, from Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry to New York’s Radio City Music Hall and Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center and Smithsonian Institution — and, of course, countless bluegrass and music festivals. He’s even been featured on the cover of Fiddler magazine.
Jeremy found himself increasingly in demand as an individual accompanist. Charlie Daniels recruited him to back Dan Tyminski on a glowing version of “The Christmas Song.” Movie star and guitarist, Steven Seagal brought him onboard for an album by the Hollywood star.
When not playing music, Jeremy enjoys fly fishing and golf. He also aspires of becoming a bow maker and has been actively pursing apprenticeships and learning opportunities to further his skills and knowledge as he embraces learning the skills of the trade.
Jeremy is looking forward to getting back out on the road and reconnecting with fans and friends!
